All Round View (Islamabad): The Afghan Loya Jirga has approved the release of 400 Afghan Taliban prisoners held on serious criminal charges to pave the way for the start of inter Afghan peace talks in the country.
The proceedings of the closing session of the Loya Jirga were broadcast live on the state and private television channels in Afghanistan on Sunday.
The Jirga passed a 25 points resolution on the last deay, which also included suggestions for speeding up the peace process. “The Members of the Loya Jirga welcome and support the peace process so that a lasting and dignified peace can come which will bring stability and security to the country”, said Atifa Tayyeb, Secretary of the Jirga.
She also said that the release of the remaining Taliban prisoners in order to remove obstacles to peace talks, stop the bloodshed and in the national interest of the country.
The Taliban have already said that their participation in the inter-afghan talks is possible only if the Afghan government releases 400 of their comrades who are facing serious charges such as murder and drug trafficking etc.
On the other hand a statement issued by Pakistani Foreign Ministry, Pakistan has repeatedly urged Afghan leaders to seize this historic opportunity to build a stable political system and peace in Afghanistan through comprehensive, lasting and all party partnership through inter-Afghan dialogue to be established She also called the world community to lend its support assistance to the Afghan peace process.
